Country Yokel heads towards the city in search for a job...
Brief summary: A “yokel” embarking on a physical journey to the city in search for work and ultimately a change of life. Elements of inner journeys can be contemplated as the central character is going on a journey in order to realise his full potential. Consequently, the audience is given a sense that throughout his journey he will be faced with obstacles and barriers in which he must overcome.
Techniques:
1. Symbolism: The composer has integrated an illustration of a grave stone to demonstrate that the city life is death. The grave stone is pointing the character in right direction towards the city as well as warning him what encumbrances he is walking into. By this we are given the notion that journeys entail all sorts of barriers and obstacles which may lead to negative experiences. However, it is important to recognise that through negative experience alternatively comes positive ones. It can be seen that the character takes note of the obstacles to come, but is determined to overcome them to reach his destination.
2. Derogatory Comment: The term ‘yokel’ describing the central character in the caption suggest that the character is breaking away from social subjugations and thus embarking on a journey in hope or recognising his full potential with the intention of overturning society’s doubts. Henceforth, we are initiated with the concept of a journey of self-growth and self-discovery. The character is heading off to the city in seek of a job and ultimately a new life where he hopes to become the best version he can possibly be. Sometimes, we undertake journeys to discover ourselves and test our limitations so that in the end we derive some sort of fulfilment and purpose in life.
3. Text: The word “progress” printed on the grave stone works in cohesion with the central subject who is walking emphasises the factor of movement throughout journeys. A journey is a constant movement towards a destination, whether it be physically or mentally or emotionally. Through journeys the individual travels from one place to another, constantly moving and evolving.
