The word, journey, tends to be elaborated into a sort of movement from one place to another. However, a journey, no matter how insignificant has the ability to expand one's learning and allows understanding and appreciation for the surroundings and environment. The variety of journeys one may take, being a physical journey, or a deep, self-reflection attains a person to observe an alteration or a change that may have happened, imposing the question if it is negative or positive. The interpretation of the progress within our world, expands a person's understanding of the past and the present, and predicts the future. The understanding of a journey encompasses the concept that a journey has the ability to change one’s perspective, which is acted upon, when a person takes a journey to indulge in the transformation of their surroundings. Many people contribute their own notions onto a society, and it takes a simple journey, either on a train (Going Back, On A Hot Night) or an actual trip to an unknown place (Flames and Dangling Wire) to develop another perspective on the area, and establishing whether it will further advance our ideas and environment, or promote the demise of an idealistic world. This also follows an acknowledgment for the wise or unauthorised decisions a person, a community or society as a whole has made, and signifies the realisation of said impact.
The poems, ‘Flame and Dangling Wire’, ‘North Coast Town’ and ‘Late Ferry’, composed all by Robert Gray, establish our thesis that a journey can in fact cause one to realise the continuous alterations to the environment, and creates a communication device towards others in the same position, to reflect on the changes, and to be aware of them at all times. Robert Gray’s poems express this journey through the multi-layering of a physical and emotional journey.
CONCEPT ON JOURNEYS...
Conventionally, journeys are perceived to be the physical movement from one point to another. A journey has been elaborated into a sense of an experience towards a destination. However, this study has developed and further expanded our understanding of ourselves, of individuals and of the world. The promotion that a journey is a vital essence of life, and involves a person’s actual overcoming of obstacles and realising true potential allows us to realise that although everyone is unique in their own manner, a journey is taken by every single person in this world whether one realises that they are. This aspect of journey allows a bond or a strong relationship to everyone in our society today. The notion of journey that has allows us to understand ourselves and of individuals is that a journey has the ability to shape and mould one and develop around weaknesses and strengths. This in turn, applies to everyone in our world, and conveys their personality and characteristics, through their overcoming moments of obstacles and barriers within a journey.
